Reading the news is useless and harmful

Reading the news only creates the illusion of a useful activity. In fact, it is a completely useless and sometimes harmful activity.

Why should you remove news apps and sites from your smartphone and browser?

Saving time is not the only reason to stop reading the news

News, especially in the format we are used to, does not help develop the brain and memory. On the contrary, they promote superficial thinking, provoke multitasking and hide the essence under tons of unnecessary information. But let's analyze why you should stop reading the news in the morning, evening and at any other time of day.

News grabs our attention.
News has ceased to be a simple report of what is happening around us - it has become a source of profit. That's why many news programs, channels, websites and apps compete for the consumer's attention.

Most news does not elicit any reaction if it is reported without sensationalism or catchy headlines. Therefore, news outlets, when providing news, embellish information, substitute concepts and make a sensation out of an ordinary event.

In addition, news does not "let go" immediately. After reading it, there is a feeling of understatement, and you start looking for related news. This feeling is repeated over and over again. As a result, you get heavily involved and waste your time reading useless information that is presented in a way that makes it almost impossible to refuse to read it.
You don't miss the really important news.
You are wasting your time and getting nothing in return. After all, most news is not about you personally and is not reflected in your work, standard of living, or relationships.

If the news you read is not directly related to your profession or even the country in which you live, it is very likely not useful information to you. If only to start a conversation with a stranger or to break an awkward pause in conversation.

You may feel that if you don't pay attention to news resources, you will fall out of public life, but this is a false feeling.

First, most news on the Internet involves events from the distant past or is news that "might happen."

Second, you will hear really serious and important news about dramatic changes in the world from other people, or you will hear the sound of an emergency siren.
News is bad for the brain and spoils the mood.
Initially, our brain automatically believes everything other people say and write. Somewhat later, it rethinks the information, which may result in doubts about what is written. But there is one important point: it is a waste of energy.

A centuries-old survival mechanism is that our brain really doesn't like to waste energy. Doubt and reflection are costly activities.

When you look at the news in a relaxed state, you don't even think about whether it's the truth or just another fake story designed to get attention.

You automatically believe everything you read and go from one short news story to the next. Your brain gets used to thinking superficially, and it becomes harder for you to focus on serious things and delve into a particular topic.

The abundance of information, fast and clingy content changes the way people think, making it harder for people to focus.

In addition, the news puts pressure on the emotional realm, bringing frustration about things that cannot be changed. Our lives are already full of anxiety and stress.
You're not refreshing knowledge-you're wasting your time.
Only a very small percentage of the news carries useful information for people, other articles are needed purely for entertainment. This knowledge is forgotten almost immediately after reading and makes no impression on you.
Reading entertaining short news distracts you from the really important stuff, but it's just as hard to give up as it is to give up bad habits. If you are used to viewing news sources in the form of a simple feed, you should periodically force yourself to read at least fiction.
But when you do decide to take this step and remove everything related to "information consumerism" from your life, you will feel the benefits very soon: your thinking will change on its own and there will be more time for really useful things.
